DeWalt Battery Compatability

DEWALT has released some sweet new batteries over the past few years. For their large cordless tools, they currently run two primary voltage platforms: 20 volts and 60 volts.

DEWALT 20V MAX and FlexVolt – What’s the Difference?

DEWALT 60V FlexVolt battery compared to DEWALT 20V MAX XT battery

For those who haven’t been paying attention, DEWALT revolutionized cordless power tools in 2016 when they released the FlexVolt platform: the first-ever multi-volt battery system. FlexVolt batteries pack 60 volts to power highly demanding tools, including DEWALT’s Atomic compact cordless tools, outdoor power equipment, work lights for the job site, saws, and nearly any tool in your trailer. As a bonus, FlexVolt batteries actually step down and run at 20 volts when attached to lower-power tools. Besides the heavy-hitting FlexVolt, DEWALT is still running strong with its tried-and-true 20-volt MAX platform. This lithium-ion system of slider batteries is compact, rugged, and made for jobs needing moderate power.

How Do I Know Which Battery I Need?

Dewalt 20 Volt Max product line includes over 250 products and growing.

With all these batteries to choose from, it might be a little confusing to know which you need for your tool. Worse yet, you especially don’t want to buy a battery only to find it doesn’t even fit in your tool. Since the two power platforms bear a striking resemblance, be certain you are adding the correct size to your cart before clicking on “Place Order.”

DEWALT has three primary voltages for their cordless tools: 20 volts, 60 volts, and 120 volts. They are all marked with the battery size they require on the tool. 20-volt tools can use 20v MAX batteries OR 60v MAX batteries. 60 and 120-volt tools can only use 60v MAX batteries.

What do FlexVolt Batteries Fit?

FlexVolt batteries are compatible with all DEWALT 60 and 20-volt DEWALT tools. Just so you know – a few exceptions exist that we’ll touch on below.

What Do DEWALT 20-Volt Batteries Fit?

Standard DEWALT 20 volt batteries are compatible with all 20-volt tools, as well as all 20-volt chargers. This means that once you join the DEWALT platform, you have access to over 100 products that all use the same battery technology.

However, DEWALT 20V MAX batteries can’t be used in FlexVolt 60v and 120v MAX tools. The lower voltage doesn’t provide enough juice for the high-demand motors. Moreover, DEWALT 20V MAX POWERSTACK batteries are compatible with all 20V MAX tools and chargers, so it can be used with over 250 different DEWALT products.

What if I Put a 20-Volt Battery in a 60-Volt Tool?

It will not fit. All 60—and 120-volt tools have plastic tabs that physically prevent using 20-volt batteries, but FlexVolt batteries have special ports that allow their use.

What Are DEWALT XR Batteries?

DEWALT 20v MAX XR batteries are just like standard 20-volt batteries but last longer relative to their size. The XR stands for Extended Runtime, so you get extra life out of them before running out of juice.

What are DEWALT POWERSTACK Batteries?

DEWALT POWERSTACK batteries utilize breakthrough pouch battery cell technology, allowing the battery to run cooler and deliver greater power. The POWERSTACK line is DEWALT’s most powerful, most compact, and lightest weight battery options.

DEWALT currently has two options in their POWERSTACK lineup. The POWERSTACK 20V MAX Compact battery has 50% more power and a 25% smaller footprint than the DCB203, the standard 20V MAX battery. The battery also features twice the lifespan of the DCB203 and an LED Fuel Gauge to monitor current battery life.

The second is the brand new POWERSTACK 20V MAX 5Ah battery. The new compact battery has 50% more power and allows 50% more work per charge compared to the DCB205, the standard 20V MAX 5.0 Ah battery, making it DEWALT’s most powerful and most efficient battery. The latest model is compatible with all DEWALT 20V MAX* tools.

Do These Batteries Work In Brushless Tools?

Yes, DEWALT batteries will work in all DEWALT tools at the correct voltage, whether brushed or brushless. Brushless refers to the construction of the motor. Brushless tools will use the batteries more efficiently and therefore last longer per charger, however, than brushed tools.

What About DEWALT 12-Volt Tools?

DEWALT 12V XR Lithium Ion battery on a white background

DEWALT also produces a line of ultra-compact 12v MAX batteries and tools. These smaller batteries only fit on tools labeled as 12v MAX, and vice versa. 20v MAX and Flexvolt batteries are not only too powerful, but they are physically too large for the receptacles on these pint-sized devices.

Do 120v MAX Tools Have Their Own Batteries Too?

No. At the time of this writing, only one DEWALT cordless tool uses 120 volts: the 12-Inch Cordless Miter Saw. While it harnesses 120v DC power, it achieves this by having two slots for 60v batteries running in series. As a substitute, DEWALT created a corded power supply adaptor for the miter saw to swap out batteries for wall power since they have the same voltage.

Are There Exceptions To These Rules?

Yes. While most DEWALT batteries fit on all tools they are marked as compatible with, a few don’t. Due to their size, FlexVolt packs don’t fit all smaller tools and adaptors. A few newer compact 20v MAX packs are slightly longer than others, and so also don’t fit all tools or chargers.

Hi Joe, Thank you for your question. When you use a DeWalt FLEXVOLT battery the tool, or in this case the USB Power Pack, will determine if the battery will be ran in the 60V or 20V connection orientation. At this time DeWalt only offers a 20V USB Power Pack so the determining factor as to what battery will run longer on the power pack will be the Amp Hour rating of your battery. The battery with the higher 20V Amp Hour (Ah) rating will last longer in that specific unit.

Hi Eric, The DEWALT 20V MAX batteries to fit into the DEWALT DCD777 series 20V MAX compact drill/driver. There are some other brands that have 20V MAX batteries (Craftsman, Black & Decker, for example) that do not fit but as long as the battery is a 20V DEWALT battery it will fit into that tool.

Hello Daniel. We would need a little more information from you to be sure we are giving the correct information, but as long as the brand of the batteries and charger match and the charger output voltage matches the battery voltage, you should be fine. The amp hours of chargers and batteries don’t matter much when we talk about if they will work. They do depend on how fast the battery will be charged.

I’m UK based and the voltages seen a little different; my impact driver is 18V for example, while the local shops sell 54V tools and batteries. I’m guessing this is pretty much equivalent, with the numbers that are close together matching those in your post?

Hi Pete, You are correct, in the United States DEWALT is able to advertise their tools at the maximum voltage the battery will put out for a fraction of a second when the tool trigger is pulled. This is why they are described as 20V MAX*. The MAX* is more of a disclaimer than anything else. The battery voltages are nominal 18V and 54V. The rest of the world makes DEWALT note the battery voltage for what it is.

          Thank you,

Hello, Thank you for your question. If you have FLEXVOLT 60V tools then we would suggest getting the FLEXVOLT 6Ah battery but if you do not and do not intend to purchase any DEWALT 60V tools then the 20V MAX XR 6.0Ah battery would be your best bet. The runtime and power will be very comparable but the 20V battery will be less expensive. If you are looking to purchase a couple of them at the same time we do offer a 2 pack of batteries and at the time of this reply the 2 pack (DCB206-2) is only $20 more expensive than the single battery.

It depends on the amp hr rating on the 20 volt battery your using. I have read that the 6 amp hr 20 volt battery has a longer run time than the 60volt flexvolt 6 amp hr battery when used in a 20 volt platform. But if you have a 60 volt 9amp hr or 12 amp hr . They will run longer than and battery you can get in the 20 volt Max line .

Hi David. The DEWALT FLEXVOLT 60V batteries are designed to fit and run their 20V tools. The battery could have something to do with the saw not working, but most likely, it is something else. If the tool is only 1 year old, we suggest bringing it to a Factory DEWALT Service Center or Authorized DEWALT Repair Center for warranty evaluation.

There’s a way you can use the 20v battery on a flexvolt tool, by breaking off the tabs. My question is, if I use a 20v battery on a flexvolt tool, will either the battery or tool be damaged. Thx.

Hello, We do not recommend breaking the tabs off of the DeWalt 20V battery to try to operate a 60V tool. Just because you can break something to make it fit does not mean you should.

Will I simply have less run time but the same power in these tools if I use a 1.5 or two amp hour Battery?

Hello, Thank you for your question. The run time will be less on a 1.5 or 2Ah battery in comparison to a 4.0Ah battery but you may also lose a little power. It is hard to say how much but the higher Ah batteries typically boost the performance of the tools.

I recently purchased online the flex volt lithium ion 20v/60v max. I notice one of those flex volt battery is not charging as well on my standard dewalt chargers. Do I need special charger for these batteries? Or I maybe have a defective battery? Thankyou

Hi Chris, Thank you for your question. The DeWalt 20V/60V FLEXVOLT batteries will charge on all DeWalt 20V chargers, there is not a specific charger for the FLEXVOLT batteries. It will seem that they are not charging as well because they have higher amp hour ratings than most standard 20V batteries and they just take longer to charge. If we think of amp hours like a fuel tank on a vehicle, the higher the amp hour the larger the tank. We get more run time but it takes longer to fill/charge.

          Thank you,

Hi John, Thank you for your comment. The DEWALT FLEXVOLT batteries charge in the 20V MAX arrangement so the charging time will depend on the charger. The other thing to consider is the Amp Hour of the battery. A FLEXVOLT battery is usually larger (higher Amp Hour) than a regular DEWALT battery so it will take longer. If the Amp Hour rating of the batteries are the same, it will be up to the quality and technology in the charger to speed up the charging process.

          Thank you,

Hello and thanks for the very helpful article. Are the 60V/20V FlexVolt Batteries compatible with the Dewalt DCS331B 20V MAX Lithium-Ion Jigsaw? I understand that the voltage is compatible, but you say in the article that SOME cordless 20V MAX tools will not allow the FlexVolt Batteries to fit in them. You do not mention the DCS331B jigsaw, so it seems the FlexVolt 60V/20V batteries WILL WORK in that tool. Is that right? Thanks very much.

Hello, Thank you for your question. The DeWalt FLEXVOLT 60V/20V batteries will work with the DCS331B Jigsaw. The compatibility issue comes into play when the battery is physically too large to fit into the tool. Some older lights and lasers have a compartment for the battery and because of the larger size of the FLEXVOLT batteries they do not fit.

The Ah rating on the battery could affect performance and runtime but it will not determine which tool it will work on (unless the battery is physically too large to fit into a designated area, as in some lights and lasers).

It should never be sold by itself with a standard battery. To operate that tool you will need to have a FLEXVOLT 60V/20V MAX battery.

Hi Miriam. The DeWalt DCR025 will accept all 20V DeWalt batteries (as of today) so you are safe using the 5.0Ah battery that comes with the string trimmer. If you are looking for more run time it will also accept up to the 6.0Ah 20V/60V FLEXVOLT battery.

Hello, Thank you for your question. We are not currently handling the Craftsman 20V tools so we cannot test this but knowing the parent company Stanley Black & Decker we would guess no. At this time the other brands: DeWalt, Porter Cable, and Bostitch all have 20V tools and none of those are straight forward compatible. We would think they would do the same with Craftsman.

Remain confused. I know the 40v batts are not compatible with 20 or 60, but still in the dark over 20 and 60 compatibility ESPECIALLY around charging. I’ve tried charging 60s on a couple of different 20v chargers I have, and the charge never goes beyond one bar. Can you list all the chargers compatible with 60 volt batteries just to be explicit?

Hi Dan, Thanks for your question. All DeWalt 20V MAX chargers will charge the 60V FLEXVOLT batteries but depending on their amp output rating and the Ah rating of your battery the charge process could take several hours. We recommend the DCB118 because it is fan cooled and offers the highest amp output rating of the DeWalt chargers.

We do apologize for the service the DeWalt radio is giving you and we suggest that you contact a DeWalt Service Center or Authorized DeWalt Service Dealer for assistance. Hi Mike, Thank you for your question. You can use your 20V DeWALT batteries in your 18V tools as long as you have the DCA1820adapter. The DC970 Drill driver uses the pod style batteries and the 20V batteries are a slide style. This adapter allows the batteries to fit on the tools.

I have a standard 20v Dewalt Drill and a 20V XR 1/4″ Impact. My XR battery doesn’t power the impact any longer, and the standard 20v charger doesn’t even recognize when I plug the XR battery into it. It charges the standard batteries just fine. When I use the standard 20v batteries in my XR impact, it powers the impact, but it has less than half the torque, doesn’t even engage the impact stage, but in my cordless drill, it’ll burn a hole in my hand if I try to hold it back. Is it the Impact, or the incompatibility of the two products?

To me it sounds like you have a defective battery but we suggest taking all 4 pieces (Impact, Drill, Battery, and Charger) into a DeWalt Factory Service Center or DeWalt Factory Authorized Service Center to have the cause identified and depending on the warranty status either corrected under warranty or estimated for repair.

Hi Thomas, Thank you for your question. First of all the DCB204 battery will work with the DCE100 blower. In actuality, all DEWALT 20V MAX batteries work with the DCE100 blower. The issue of a batter not fitting comes into play with a couple select tools, such as the DCS371P1, DCS371B, DCR015, DCA1820, and DWST08810. These tools have a closed battery compartment and some of the new larger batteries like the DCB606, DCB609, and DCB612 will not physically fit. The smaller batteries will fit just fine. If the compartment was larger the bigger batteries would slide on and work just fine.

Hi Brandan, The DEWALT 36V lineup is not compatible with any other voltage line of their tools and the tools and batteries have been discontinued. There may be some older batteries on the internet but we would caution you when buying them. The 36V line up has been discontinued for some time now and any batteries that could be available for sale would be at least 5-7 years old.

Hello, Thank you for your question. When charging the FLEXVOLT batteries are in their 20V mode so they will be able to interact with all DEWALT 20V chargers. Some chargers will take longer than others to charge the battery but it will still charge them. There is not a specific charger for FLEXVOLT batteries so any charger you receive in a FLEXVOLT kit will work on all 20V batteries.

From our past experience they will keep the batteries available for quite some time. They are still producing the 18V Ni-Cd batteries whose platform was stopped 5-10 years ago.

Ex: I have their cordless framing nailer and cordless finish nailer. The framer takes a 4a and the finish a 2a. Can I use the 2a battery In the framer wile the 4a is charging? Hi Rocky, Thank you for your question. When we are talking about DEWALT 20V batteries the Amp Hour is very similar to a fuel tank in a vehicle. The higher the Amp Hour the larger the fuel tank and the longer the tool will be able to run. You can use a lower Amp hour battery on a high demand tool, like a framing nailer or some saws and grinders, but it will not last as long and you may not get the performance you require out of it. It will not hurt the tool or the battery but your using experience may not be as you hoped. It is like having a Ferrari with a 1 gallon fuel tank. It sure is fun to drive but you can only go around the block 1 time before you run out of gas.

If I use a 20V Max 1.3 Ah battery in a DCHT820B Hedge Trimmer, what is expected time before the battery dies? I would like to avoid buying a larger battery if possible. Thank you!

Just buy multiple 1.3Ah batteries Dale. That’s what I did. When the batteries are brand new they’ll run the hedge trimmers for about a half hour constantly (I put a zip strip on the trigger). And longer after they’re broken in. 2 – 1.3Ah batteries will conquer any job.

Is there an adapter that will I can buy to use my dewalt 20v max batteries on a mastercraft 20v drill? Mastercraft are almost extinct so replacement batteries are almost impossible to find. So I was hoping I could find one to use my dewalt batteries on those tools also. Thank u so much.

I have a DCB107 charger I bought some time ago with a drill using DCB207 batteries. I just bought a larger hammer drill that came with a DCB115 charger and DCB205 batteries. While everything seems to be fit functional, I have a question or two about the chargers current compatibility. It would be great to have a charger in the shop as well as one (on an inverter) at the job site. Other than possibly charging slower, is there a concern with charging the DCB205 batteries on the DCB107 charger? What about charging the DCB207 on the DCB115 charger?

Hi Larry, Thank you for your question. There is no concern charging any DEWALT 20V battery on any DEWALT 20V charger. They are all compatible with each other and like you stated, the difference will be the amount of time it takes to charge the battery.

    Hi Acme Tools,
I have the Dewalt Bradder (DC608K).
Is the Dewalt adapter (DCA1820) Compatible with this? using either the 5Ah Li-Ion (DCB184-XE) Or 4Ah Li-Ion (DCB182-XE)?
And Very disappointedly I’ve heard it doesn’t, but I feel I’m in the right place to get the correct information.😉
As I’ve found an adapter that claims success with this.
Could you please also confirm this.

Hi Doug, DEWALT does offer a 5.0Ah battery and you can find it HERE. The main benefit of running a 5.0Ah battery vs the 1.3Ah is run time but there could be a slight increase in performance of the tool vs what the 1.3Ah battery offers.

    Hi
Adding more details on my previous query and confusion,
On De Walt website : https://www.dewalt.com/products/outdoor/battery-powered-outdoor-equipment
you can also find this statement:
*Maximum initial battery voltage (measured without a workload) is 20 and 60 volts. Nominal voltage is 18 and 54.
This statement does not help in making clear whether my batteries (DCB546) are compatible with 20V/60V MAX* FLEXVOLT Tools.
Moreover, I would ask whether my charger: DCB118 can recharge the 20V/60V MAX* FLEXVOLT® Batteries and viceversa I can use a DCB118 chrger to charge my DCB546 batteries.
    Thanks a lot!

We cannot guarantee the accuracy of our information for European markets because our batteries and tools are designated for the North American market. Hello. Thank you for your question. The DEWALT DCB112 is designed for an input of 120VAC at 60Hz. If you want to use it in Europe on their 240VAC system you will need some kind of step down transformer to make sure the voltage and hertz to the charger are 120VAC @ 60Hz. This can be done but it might be more cost effective to find a European charger for the battery that runs on their 240VAC system.

      Thank you,

Hello, the DEWALT FLEXVOLT 20V/60V batteries are compatible with your DEWALT 18V tools as long as the correct adaptor is used. There could be some exceptions to this rule and not because the battery will not operate the tool, some tools do not have the room for an adapter and a battery to be added to it. There are some lasers and vacuums that have enclosed battery compartments and that limited space would be the determining factor.

Hello, Thank you for your question. Worldwide, DEWALT has 2 18V systems, they have their original 18V Ni-Cad batteries and in South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa they have their 18V Li-Ion batteries (labeled as 20V MAX in the United States). The voltages you have are correct and the Ah of the battery does not determine if it will fit onto a drill but without the knowledge of what composition batteries and model drill you have we cannot say if they will fit or not. Feel free to reply with the part numbers of your drill and batteries and we will be able to let you know.

Hi Rick, Typically, when DEWALT makes a Type change, it is because they either updated a part or changed suppliers on a part. When they make feature and specification updates they will change the model number completely.

Hello, Thank you for your question. The DCB201 is a 20V Max battery and the DCB126 is a 12V Max battery. You can ONLY interchange these IF the tool accepts 12V and 20V batteries. At this time, we are only aware of a radio and a light that will accept both so if that is your application, yes you can, but if that is not your application, no you cannot.

I originate from the UK where the dewalt flexvolt batteries are 18v/54v. However, I now reside in Thailand and need to replace some of my old stock batteries. Are the 20v and 20/60v batteries compatable with the European dewalt toolset i.e. 18v and 18/54v. Only asking because Thailand is aligned with the US and seems to only stock 20v and 20/60v dewalt batteries.

Will I see a difference in drilling (digging?) performance by using larger 9ah batteries, or is the difference just a matter of run time per charge? Would a 9ah-equipped tool put out more power for my intended application? Thanks in advance for your replies!

Hi Tom. The DE9503 looks to be a 18V NiMH battery that is not being produced any longer. If you can find any of the DC9096 batteries they would work but those are a NiCd battery. If you want to start using the new Li-Ion 20V batteries you can purchase a battery adapter that will allow you to run the new batteries in your older tools.
