New Release: The Honda HRN Lawn Mower Series

All-New Honda HRN Lawn Mower Series

Honda announced the replacement of the HRR series with the all-new Honda HRN Lawn Mower series. The foundation of the HRN series- the new Honda GCV170 engine- delivers more power and torque, providing users with a better lawn care experience. Honda plans to replace the HRR lawn mower series with the HRN series by incorporating four major areas of innovation: cutting-edge power, design, intuitive controls, and easier operation and serviceability. These areas of innovation work together to make lawn care tasks more productive and efficient than ever before.

Honda HRN Rugged Design

The engineering team at Honda designed the new series from the ground up. They studied, tested, and listened to customers to design a series that users need, including optimizing airflow and a heavy-duty steel 21-inch curvilinear mower deck that stands up to the most rugged of conditions. The redesigned deck produces an efficient path for grass clippings to pass into the bag or on the ground, preventing grass clogging.  The new HRN models feature precision-crafted blades under the deck. The exclusive Honda Twin Blade MicroCut System can accurately cut and mulch at any height. For added durability, the front wheels have been reconfigured to a single axle, while nut and bolt connections are made of steel and embedded in resin.

HRN Power and Torque

The new performance-driven Honda GCV170 engine delivers 9% more power and 18% more torque than the Honda GCV160 in the outgoing HRR series. The increased power and torque of the new GCV170 engine provides stable RPMS for better consistency in cutting, mulching, and bagging. With higher torque and power comes the ability to tackle through a variety of mowing conditions while still receiving the clean, even cut that Honda users require. In addition to improved features, the engine produces less vibration, which reduces users fatigue and makes mowing more comfortable and enjoyable.

The Honda GCV170 engine features the exclusive Honda Auto Choke System, creating a simplified structure that is automatic and free of levers and cables.  Whether it’s hot or cold, the engine starts up easily for immediate mowing. Once the engine is running, the Auto Choke automatically returns to an optimal operating position. The GCV170 also features the Honda exclusive CycloFlow design. The design produces higher turbulence in the cylinder and more stable combustion that results in easy starting and greater resistance to lower-quality fuel.

HRN Intuitive Controls

In order to out-perform the HRR lawn mower series, the HRN lawn mower series is designed with a variety of intuitive controls for smoother operating. The improved Adjustable Smart Drive allows for ease of speed variation with a press of a wide paddle control on the handlebar. But the technologically innovative features don’t stop there. The 3-in-1 Clip Director lever controls an entry shutter between the lawn mower deck and the grass bag. The lever allows a user to mulch 11% of clippings, bag 100% of clippings, and rear discharge. The operator can select mulching or bagging options without tools or attachments required.

Other features that set the HRN series ahead of others include a simplified height control system and two-way releasing rear-wheel ratchets. The height control system consists of a new dual-lever height adjustment. With only two levers, users can quickly and conveniently make adjustments for seven different cutting heights. This feature makes it fast and easy to take a little off the top, make deep cuts, or mow at standard maintenance heights. The two-way releasing rear-wheel ratchets increase maneuverability by reducing the effort needed to turn or pivot in tight areas, delivering maximum flexibility and ease.

HRN Series Operation and Serviceability

The Honda HRN series underwent operation redesigns to improve efficiency, leaving more free time for the operator. The series incorporates a fuel spout that is 60% wider than the HRR models. Reducing the chance of spillage, the new models feature an elevated oil spout that makes it easy to fill the gas or change the oil. Additionally, the new design incorporates a smart engine layout with easy access to the spark plug, and an optimized air cleaner that can be changed without tools.

Assembled in the USA

More than 75% of Honda Power Equipment products are produced in America at the Honda facilities in Swepsonville, North Carolina. The 107-acre campus house both Honda Power Equipment Manufacturing, Inc. (HPE) and Honda Power Product R&D operations. The Honda facilities designed, tested, and manufactured the Honda HRN lawn mowers. Honda has an active collaboration between power equipment development and the production team.

As a result of the partnership, HRN lawn mowers go through an expedited design and development process. Due to the collaboration, The HRN lawn mower experienced improved manufacturing productivity within the facility. The enhanced productivity reflects in the 20 seconds it takes for a new Honda HRN model to roll of the Swepsonville production line, whereas the HRR lawn models take 24 seconds. Because of the increased production time allows Honda cost control and more efficient supply to customers.

Does the GCV170 have the same starter assembly as the GCV160? Finding parts info for the GCV170 is hard if not impossible, even on Honda sites.
