Types Of Pumps
The power source for pumps vary, but they all perform the same function; that is, to move liquid from one place to another. There are solar powered pumps available, and many use electrical motors. Hand operated pumps are useful in many situations as well. If you do not get water from municipal sources, but have a well on your property, you will need a well pump.
People are sometimes forced to buy pumps to deal with sudden occurrences like flooding after a storm. A pump can be used to move water from the basement to speed up the repair and recovery process after a flood. For the most part, the choice of pump will depend on what exactly you want to do.
De-watering Pumps
These are typically used in professional applications like mining, construction and de-silting operations. However, in cases where residences are affected by mucky floodwater, these pumps can be used as well, although these types are usually more lightweight. They are also useful for draining pools and removing water from boats.
Submersible Pumps or Sump Pumps
As the name suggests, these types can be placed below the surface of the water. The motor has a protective covering to shield it from water. Some de-watering pumps fall into this category, but they could be used for other purposes as well. These pumps are commonly used in fountains and garden features. They serve a variety of commercial and residential applications.
Well Pumps for Residential Water
People who live outside the service area for municipal water services or who simply choose to use water from their own land have that option. A shallow well jet pump or something similar is generally what you’re going to use to pump water to your home.
Choosing a Pump
One of the first points of consideration is whether a gas or electric powered pump is best. If you are about to buy a pump after a storm to move water from the home, and there is a power outage, a gas powered pump is the clear choice. Electric water pumps are more suitable for indoor use and some can work with standard outlets. Gas powered pumps usually have more power, but they require more maintenance than electric types. Gas pumps are considered more ideal for outdoor work. Other important features of the pump to consider are:
- The weight: if you don’t plan to change the position of the pump, you can choose a heavier, sturdier model. Otherwise, you can look for a portable type if you know that you will be moving it around.
- The GPM discharge: GPM, or gallons per minute, refers to the ability of the pump to move water from the location.
- The type of volute: this component helps to push the water out of the pump. A cast iron volute lasts longer, and thereby enhances the longevity of the pump.
If you need a pump for an emergency situation you might not need to invest in a high performance pump. However, if your area experiences occasional flooding, it makes sense to have a good pump on hand to effectively clear your home after a flood. The faster you can remove the water from a flooded home, the more quickly you will be able to get it all dried out and begin restoration.

April 4, 2018 at 11:32 pmThanks for explaining the different options and where they’re installed, such as the sump pump which is placed below the water’s surface and has a protective covering that protects it. When choosing one to use, you’d probably want to consider all the features, such as their power, how they work, their size, and where they’re installed. Once you’ve figured out which one you need, it could help to hire a professional to install it so that it’s done correctly in order to ensure that it works.
